People of Amsterdam | Tony

Meet the People of Amsterdam. Here we will showcase a different Amsterdam native every week. Every Amsterdam native will share a little about their lives, their favorite spots, and what makes Amsterdam so special to them. Take it all in. After all, the People of Amsterdam know Amsterdam best. This week: Tony Boakye, co-founder Phatcamp, a projectmanagement agency for the entertainment agency.

Where can you find the best coffee in town?
I haven’t been drinking coffee for a while and actually drink tea now. But if I think about my pre-tea era, I always went to Caffènation on De Theophile de Bockstraat. Bert, the owner, is a great guy and the coffee was always amazing.

Where to go for a Sunday brunch?
If I had relaxing weekend, I love to have brunch at Voldaan on the JP. Heijestraat (Amsterdam Oud-West). It’s cozy and they have a great menu.

Where to go to dancing all night long?
RadioRadio at Westergas is my spot! It always has the cozyness of a brown bar but with high quality musical programming. It’s easy to dance to and ranges from house to disco to hiphop. All of which lay close to my heart.

What’s your guilty pleasure when you’re hungover?
If I’m hungover I always have an intense craving for the grilled cheese at Stacked T’s on De Clercqstraat.

Where do you go for your favorite dessert?
The ‘stroopwafel trommeltje’ at Restaurant Daalder is the absolute best ever!

What is your favorite store to go shopping?
Sterk on the Clercqstraat! This store has a special place in my heart. You can get all kinds of things until very late at night, and that has helped me at many different moments and times. When I still lived on the Bloemgracht, I often came to get some extra alcoholic refreshments before or after a party. Now, for example, I often come there because it is right next to our office and therefore the easiest place to get something if I have a appetite or have to work overtime and do not feel like ordering something to eat.

Where to go to find the best Dutch local treat?
The Albert Cuyp Market of course.

Where to go to spot some art or culture?
I would love to go to Het Hem in the near future because I’ve heard really positive things about it, but for now I would have to say The Tropenmuseum is my favorite.

Where can you get the best cocktails in town?
I’m not the best guy to ask this question as I don’t really drink a lot of cocktails. When I do, I have a Moscow Mule or Dark ‘n Stormy, boring right? The best I had were at Feijoa at the Vijzelstraat.

Favorite neighbourhood to stroll around the whole day?
Going to the market on the Westergas on the first Sunday of the month is perhaps one of the nicest things you can do on a Sunday. Lots to taste and see! When you’re done, go to Troost or TonTon. Great Sunday! However, when it comes to beauty, Amsterdam East beats West. But I don’t come there as much as I would like, so maybe I’ll have to do that on my next Sunday off!

Let’s talk self care. What’s your favorite spot?
Freshcut Zuid on the Albert Cuypstraat, owned by my good friend Dior. When I stepped out of there, I always feel like a new man.

Where do we get the best rooftop view of Amsterdam? What’s special about that spot?
Floor17 It’s in the area where I live (Overtoom), has a great view and organizes cool events like movenight and curling in the winter.

And last but not least, what is by far your most favorite spot in Amsterdam?
I’m been coming to Sterk for years. It has a special place in my heart and is my go-to place for anything I need.
