People of Amsterdam | Joey

Meet the People of Amsterdam. Here we will showcase a different Amsterdam native every week. Every Amsterdam native will share a little about their lives, their favorite spots, and what makes Amsterdam so special to them. Take it all in. After all, the People of Amsterdam know Amsterdam best. This week: Joey de Boer, tattoo artist.

Where can you find the best coffee in town?
For me it’s at the Hoxton, it’s a low-key place with plenty of people around and a nice atmosphere. When I go, I order a flat white with oat milk.

Where to go for a Sunday brunch?
Staring at Jacob is a great place to go for a nice boozy (or sober) brunch. I get some chicken and waffles to celebrate how healthy I’ve been all week.

Where to go to dancing all night long?
I usually end up at Paradiso for a concert, I don’t really frequent the normal nightlife in Amsterdam

What’s your guilty pleasure when you’re hungover?
A good mimosa will cure any hangover.

Where do you go for your favorite dessert?
A nice drink at the Pulitzer Bar beats any dessert.

What is your favorite store to go shopping?
Lately I’ve been frequenting Arket for good basics. Or de Bijenkorf if I’m feeling fancy.

Where to go to find the best Dutch local treat?
Van Dobben or Febo is my go-to for any friends from out of town.

Where to go to spot some art or culture?
Stedelijk museum or Foam never disappoint.

Where can you get the best cocktails in town?
For me it’s at the Pulitzer, the atmosphere is hard to beat.

Favorite neighbourhood to stroll around the whole day?
The Nine Streets are like my second home. Plenty of places to see.

Let’s talk self care. What’s your favorite spot?
For me it’s definitely Haarbarbaar, a great haircut and a beard trim (coincidentally right above my own studio).

Where do we get the best rooftop view of Amsterdam? What’s special about that spot?
A’DAM tower has a great view, try the swing if you really want to see it top down.

And last but not least, what is by far your most favorite spot in Amsterdam?
My shop is the place where I feel free creatively. I consciously have a separation between work and home in that regard. Home is tranquility and here I create things.
