People of Amsterdam | Zoe

Meet the People of Amsterdam. Here we will showcase a different Amsterdam native every week. Every Amsterdam native will share a little about their lives, their favorite spots, and what makes Amsterdam so special to them. Take it all in. After all, the People of Amsterdam know Amsterdam best. This week: Zoë van den Elshout, Freelance Marketeer.

What’s your favorite spot in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is a great city, but unfortunately not directly situated near the coast. To still find some beach vibes in summer, I always go to Homeland (old marine area). I know the weather in this picture makes it look like a depressing place: but please imagine it to be sunny and packed with groups of happy people. You can also take a refreshing dive into the water, a real lifesaver during our Dutch heatwaves.

Where can you find the best coffee in town?
I’m not that much of a coffee fan – but I do like to visit Il Momento and have an oat milk cappuccino (very original) at their window seats/terrace. Great place to clear your mind, but you can get some work done too if needed.

Where to go for a Sunday brunch?
Benjis Amsterdam: as they serve my all time favourite burrata (and the rest of their menu is delicious as well).

Where to go to dancing all night long?
Difficult one: I don’t have a favourite club. It really depends on my mood and the line-up. I’m a fan of various genres: minimal and tech-house to funky disco or afrohouse! But if I have to choose: Bret, Lofi and Shelter (To be completely honest, I’m more of a daytime party lover: so can’t wait for all the events this spring and summer. DGTL to kick off, back to Festimi every Sunday, and I think Ponton will also be a great new party location. I will try it out soon as PIV records is hosting a party.

What’s your guilty pleasure when you’re hungover?
I grew up in the south of the Netherlands surrounded by nature, and still love to escape the city sometimes. When hungover, my cure would be to visit de Geitenboerderij (Goat farm) in Amsterdamse Bos. Some fresh air and cuddling a baby goat will cure your hangover straight away (tip: they also serve breakfast AND you can participate in goat yoga. Sign up online!)

Where do you go for your favorite dessert?
Does cheese count as a favourite dessert? Then Fromagerie Abraham Kef or the new Kaasbar Amsterdam!

What’s your favorite store to go shopping?
I am always hunting for vintage treasures, but preferably outside of Amsterdam. However: de Ruilhoek in Amsterdam South is pretty nice.

Where to go to find the best Dutch local treat?
As you’ve probably read from this interview I’m not that good with choosing just one favourite.. So I would recommend to take a stroll over Albert Cuyp market and catch them all: stroopwafels, herring and bitterballen!

Where to go to spot some art or culture?
If you’re into contemporary art and photography like me: go visit Stedelijk museum and Foam Photography Museum. If you’re in a more adventurous mood, a visit to urban jungle Hortus Botanicus or Youseum / Wondr Experience will also be a great experience.

Where can you get the best cocktails in town?
Go for a Negroni or Bellini at Cecconi’s in the afternoon. Great atmosphere!

Favorite neighbourhood to stroll around the whole day?
Definitely Amsterdam Old-West. Have a walk through vondelpark, buy some groceries at Ten Katemarkt and check out some cool shops or restaurants at Jan Pieter Heijestraat.

Where do we get the best rooftop view of Amsterdam? What’s special about that spot?
The Loft in Amsterdam Tower. Make sure to check upcoming daytime parties hosted at this location, amazing to be at a party and see the sunrise or sunset over the city of Amsterdam.

Let’s talk self care. What’s your favorite spot? (for facial, manicure, pedicure or haircut)
Soap Treatment Store for the best facials, spa day at Sauna Deco or Spa Zuiver.
